Use of Emulsifiers, Dispersants, and Wetting Agents to Enhance Digestion of Formulated Diets Fed to Animals
Project Leader: Christopher Kohler
Unit: College of Science, Fisheries and Illinois Aquaculture Center
Brief Description:
This invention is a new use of and formulation of emulsifiers, dispersants, and wetting agents. Added to formulated diets of animal feeds, this invention greatly enhances gastric digestion by preventing compaction of residuum bolus. Synchrony of lipid evacuation with polar nutrients is increased by preventing stratification of lipids from other components of the residuum.
Patent Status:
Patent pending.
Potential Commercial Uses:
A substantial improvement in feed conversion efficiency could significantly reduce feed costs. Research indicates that this invention may have immediate applications in the aquaculture industry, including salmon and other large-scale fish farming operations. Other animal feed applications could also benefit from this invention.
