Health & Physical Considerations: We consider this program moderately strenuous because of the amount of walking involved. You will spend anywhere from 3 - 4 hours per day walking. The altitude (5000 ft) and at times the sun can become warm. We strongly recommend a hat, sunscreen, and a comfortable pair of walking shoes. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends immunizations for travelers going to countries where Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are risks. Both the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) have identified Mexico as a risk area for both types of Hepatitis. Allow ample time for the Hepatitis series. Our program doesnot require these immunizations.Tetanus and diphtheria boosters are not necessary, but if needed, then do so. The CDC web site will advise you further. No immunization certification is required to enter Mexico, but we recommend that you review your immunization records. If you are going to travel in rural areas before or after this program, please contact your physician as other types of safeguards may be necessary. The U.S. State Department’s web site provided general information on a safe trip abroad. All travelers planning to lay over in Mexico City (not Oaxaca) should be aware of the pollution situation and the extremely poor air quality. Mexico City's air pollution consistently exceeds many international standards. Smog is usually at its worst from November to March. Air pollution may produce chronic respiratory ailments, such as asthma, or hamper the body's immune system. We advise you to consult your physician about the conditions mentioned above before departing. |
