Research Conducted by:
Dr. Alan Walters -Vegetable Production
Research:
The
primary focus of our applied research involves studying various cultural
aspects of cucurbitous and solanaceous vegetable crops. Breeding of some of
these crops is also done on a limited basis.
Horseradish
is also an important crop in southern Illinois and there are several
problems relating to its production that need to be addressed. Future
research will focus on trying to solve some of these problems.
Graduate
students are an important part of the research program.
Past graduate students have studied various problems in vegetable production
including research projects on:
1) pollination requirements of seedless watermelon,
2) management strategies to enhance earliness of muskmelon, and
3) evaluation of mulching and tillage systems relating to water retention in
tomato production.
Other
research projects include evaluating cultivars for the southern Illinois
environment, evaluation of reduced tillage systems for vegetable production,
management of viruses infecting cucurbits in southern Illinois, influence of
cucurbit viruses on squash production as it relates to the effect on net
photosynthesis, and pollination requirements of cucurbitous vegetable crops.
