Research:
Dr.
Lightfoot's research includes:
1. Marker Assisted Selection, Genetic Markers, SNPs, microsatellites and
AFLP.
2. Plant, animal and fungal bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC)
Libraries.
3. Rapid Genome Wide Physical Map Builds, Integration, and Use.
4. EST library sequencing and expression.
5. Genomic DNA sequencing (map based, WGS or framework based).
6. GMO safety and content testing in food.
7. Metanomics and Metabolic Profiling.
8. Nutraceuticals, bioactive foods, animal and human health.
9. Environmental remediation
10. Nitrogen signaling, assimilation, and metabolism.
11. Plant Disease Resistance
12. Agricultural Bioterrorism agents and defense
His future research should include works on GMO safety and gene discovery by
genomics, particularly methods to read and use DNA sequences of
chromosomes. He also hopes to target commercially valuable disease
resistances, phytopharmaceuticals and crop yeild boosting elements. His
research projects are funded by the NSF, USDA, USB, ISPOB, CFAR and other
industrial sponsors. He is also involved in collaborations with twelve
SIUC faculty in eight additional projects.
