Syllabus for: PLSS 409 Crop Physiology and Ecology

Spring 2004

Instructor:      Dr. Alan Walters - Assistant Professor of Horticultural Science
                     109 Public Policy Institute
                     Office - 453-3446           Secretary - 453-2496
Office hours:  Monday 9-12, Tuesday 9-12 (or by appointment)

Class:  Lecture - Ag. 166; 12:00 P.M. – 12:50 P.M. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Course Description:  A general introduction to the processes affecting growth of agricultural crops.  Emphasis will be placed upon the manner in which these processes relate to agronomic/horticultural crop production.

Course Objectives:  PLSS/PSGA 409.  3 hours. Crop Physiology and Ecology.
          1.       Understand the principles of basic plant structure, growth, and development.

2.       Understand the processes affecting growth of agricultural crops.  Emphasis will be placed upon the manner in which these processes relate to
                 agronomic/horticultural crops.

3.       Demonstrations of principle concepts underlying plant physiology will be demonstrated in the classroom via classroom laboratory exercises.

Prerequisites: PLB 200, CHM 140B

Attendance:
Without regular, punctual attendance, you should not expect to obtain a good grade in this course.  Do not ask me for class notes.  If attendance is regular and punctual, I feel that the student has an interest in learning and understanding the material presented.  This indicates to me that the student has a willingness to learn and should be rewarded if a borderline grade is obtained.

Text:     Plant Physiology, 2nd Edition by Taiz and Zeiger.  Some handouts will be given as needed.

The academic honesty policy will follow the Student Conduct Code, section II, article A.

Course Requirements and Grading:
         Audit-regular class attendance

Your grade will be determined based on the following:
              3 exams (20 % each)                                                60%
              Unannounced Quizzes                                              15%
              Comprehensive Final                                                25%
                             Total                                                        100%

Unannounced Quizzes - there will be 7 during the course of the semester and the 2 lowest will be dropped (so will receive grade for 5 highest scores), there will be no make-ups for any reason-15% of grade and each will be worth 3 %.

Graduate students must develop a term paper (4-5 pages, double spaced) on a current topic relevant to plant physiology.  It will count as ½ of the Final Exam.
A.     Introduction (why is topic important?)
B.     Outcomes of current and past research
C.     Importance of outcomes to topic
D.     Future Directions, Applicability
E.      Literature Cited

Topics: Talk to Instructor before starting on paper (need to develop a topic)
