Training Opportunities

Diversity Training: CODT offers general diversity training for students, faculty and staff ranging from introductory to intermediate and advanced courses. Topics range from a discussion of basic diversity language to managing diversity in the workplace and teaching in the multicultural classroom. Interactive training is available for presentations in residence halls and for student organizations.

“Stop the Hate!”

It is a nationwide program aimed at fighting and preventing bias incidents and hate crimes. Training sessions ranging from one hour to one day are available from CODT and focus on what individuals and groups can do to end hate crimes and build better communities.

More than half a million college students are targets of bias-driven slurs or physical assaults.

EVERY DAY …

At least one hate crime occurs on a college campus.

A college student somewhere sees or hears racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise biased words or images.

Most Hate Crimes are committed by young people upon other young people.

College Campuses are the third most common place for hate crimes to occur.

 

What is a Hate Crime?

Illinois provides for criminal and civil penalties against an individual or individuals who assault, trespass upon, or cause damage to the property of or injure physically or emotionally another person or persons because of such person’s race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or national origin. (720 ILCS 5/12-7.1) Classifications vary from state to state.

What is a Bias Incident?

A bias incident is an act of conduct, speech or expression to which a bias motive is evident as a contributing factor. While it does not reach the level of a crime, it is directed at a person of a different group with the intent to cause distress. Example: Defacing a bulletin board with slurs.

What is Hate Speech?

Hate speech is a description that perceives inferiority of the targeted group by denying or belittling their humanity. It is directed at a person of a different identity group and includes references to these differences with the intent to cause distress. It typically contains recognizable slurs against the targeted group.

How do I know if I am a victim?
