Michael D. Hanes is Professor Emeritus of Music at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. A graduate of Millikin University and Southern Illinois University, Mr. Hanes has been teaching at SIU since 1965. He oversees all aspects of the band program at SIU and conducts the University Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble has toured in several states, with recent performances for the Illinois Music Educators Association and the North Central region of the College Band Directors National Association.

In addition to his ensemble work, Mr. Hanes teaches applied percussion, percussion techniques and instrumental methods. He also serves as Music Director for SIU's McLeod Theater Summer Playhouse. He is active and in demand as a guest conductor and adjudicator for bands throughout the region.
