SIU Improvisation Unit - siuIU

Initiated in Spring of 2008, the Southern Illinois University Improvisation Unit (siuIU)
is an accredited SIUC School of Music ensemble that studies and performs nonidiomatic
improvisation and is one of the few of its kind in the academic world. While
improvisation is the oldest and most commonly practiced form of musicking known to
man it is often the least appreciated, understood, and represented in academic
settings. The primary objectives of the ensemble are to: reexamine individual
preconceptions of music; explore generative modes of musicking; reexamine
traditional instrument identities and performance protocol. The siuIU meets once per
week in the Spring semester and performs throughout the year as part of the
Southern Illinois Improvisation Series. Enrollment is determined by audition.
