Percussion Group

Established in Fall 2005, the SIUC Percussion Group (SIUC-PG) is a
multifaceted chamber music group whose purpose is to explore and
expand the diverse repertory of percussion music. The group studies and
performs a multiplicity of genres including the “classic” works for
percussion, electro-acoustic music, free and controlled improvisation,
student compositions, and world musics of Africa, Brazil, Cuba,
Guatemala, and Mexico. Their inter-media performances incorporate
musical theatrics, electronics, spoken word, improvisation, video, dance,
and occasional mixed instrument collaborations.
The group rehearses three days each week for a total of four hours and
averages five performances per semester. Community engagement is an
important part of the group’s work and is fostered through many
interactive children’s concerts, off-campus performances, and regional
touring. Programs include works from two to twelve or more players and,
to date, the group has presented 27 world premiers with several more
scheduled for the near future. Enrollment is determined by audition.
