The SIUC School of Music has a history of composition via technology that extends back to the early 1960's, when the late Robert Moog, at the beginning of his ground-breaking career, personally built his third MOOG SYNTHESIZER for the university. The Southern Illinois Children's Choir program, now in its second decade, is open to singers in grades 3 through 9. The organization is made up of two auditioned treble ensembles: the Apprentices, which is a training choir, and the Choristers, which is a more advanced group. The Director is Alice Berry. For over one hundred years, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra (SISO), composed of faculty and students of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), as well as talented community members and area professionals, has brought outstanding music to Southern Illinois. The annual Southern Illinois Music Festival features more than 50 performances in venues from Mt. Vernon to Cairo and Murphysboro to Marion, including a six-concert series at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Shryock Auditorium. Musicians from throughout the United States, Europe and Asia perform orchestral and chamber music, opera, ballet, musical theater, jazz, patriotic and new music, in an informal atmosphere. Strollers welcome! A free concert series designed to expose youngsters (and their parents), from birth through preschool, to live classical music and jazz. Kindermusik is an award-winning system for newborns through age seven and their parents. In a Kindermusik class, educators lead a group of parents and their children through activities, using music and movement, that nurture skills in the whole child: cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and language.
