Christopher Allen, born in Wheaton, Illinois, has been a Lecturer/ Guitar Instructor at SIUC since 2002. He is also a guitar instructor at John A. Logan College and Southeastern Illinois College, and has been assistant guitar instructor at the Annual Guitar Summer Seminar since 2001.
While on the faculty at SIUC he has taught private lessons, classroom guitar, music history, and assisted and performed with the guitar ensemble. He has performed guitar with the Altgeld Chamber Players, the Southern Illinois Children’s Choir, and duets with violin, flute, saxophone, harpsichord, and voice. In addition to guitar, he has played mandolin with the Concert Choir, and banjo with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Altgeld Chamber players, and the McLeod Summer Playhouse.
In 2007 he has performed with soprano Tania Combs at the 16th annual Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival, a contemporary solo piece by Dr. Kathleen Ginther at the Outside the Box Music Festival, and jazz guitar and banjo with the Mcleod Summer Playhouse. He is currently preparing a recital for flute and guitar with Dr. Suzanne Lord in December.
Mr. Allen has received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in Classical Guitar Performance at SIUC while studying with Joseph Breznikar. He has also performed in Masterclasses with virtuosos Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Denis Azabagic. In 2002 he was the first to perform Joseph Breznikar’s Twelve American Etudes for Guitar since the composers premiere in 1990 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Allen was also a Laureate Performer at the 2004-5 Southern Illinois Young Artist Series in Edwardsville, Ill.
