Each fall, SIUC University Bands hosts the Music and Motion Marching Band Competition. Approximately twenty of the finest high school marching bands from southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri perform in McAndrew Stadium for an enthusiastic audience and well-known adjudicators. Previous adjudicators include: Dr. Richard Miles, editor of Teaching Music Through Performance; Dr. Gary Smith, Director Emeritus of the Marching Illini; Dr. Carolyn Barber, Director of Bands at the University of Nebraska Lincoln; Dr. Richard Goodstein, Chair of the Music Department at Clemson University; and Brett Kuhn, Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps percussion caption head.
Music and Motion was first started by the Epsilon Kappa chapter of Phi Mu Alpha with the help of the SIUC chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota and the SIUC School of Music. As the event grew over the years, the SIUC School of Music began to run the majority of the event, with tremendous help from Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota, and other organizations.
