  • EST-343 will be performed primarily via an on-line course delivery system called BlackBoard.

  • Students will purchase equipment and text to perform the labs.

  • Lab questions are via BlackBoard.

  • The semester project will be assigned and graded by the EST-342 instructor.

  • Please see the two links below for more information.

Equipment & Text

Required text and materials: - View more information

  • "What's a Microcontroller?" by Andy Lindsay.

  • "What's a Microcontroller?" parts kit.

  • BASIC Stamp HomeWork Board.

  • Serial Communications Cable/USB.

  • PC running Windows or Windows emulation software.

  • Internet Connectivity for BlackBoard.

"What's a Microcontroller?" kit, parts and HomeWork Board combo  - $99.99

NOTE: There is a new version of the text/kit:

  • It cleans up most chapters and helps explain concepts.

  • It changes the parts from a photo-resistor to photo-transistor.

  • It provides a USB adapter.

  • The old text/kit may still be used if you get it used. If your kit needs USB adapter instead of using a serial COM port, one may be purchased here: USB to Serial adapter (Not all Serial/USB devices may work, so this one is recommended).

The text, parts kit and HomeWork board and serial cable are purchased as a kit. The HomeWork Board has an integrated controller with a breadboard. Requires a 9V battery not included.

Order from Radio Shack

Order from Parallax - BASIC Stamp Activity Kit (with USB adapter)

eBay often has the "Activity Kit" through Parallax on sale - check there once in a while.

Overview of EST 343 and BlackBoard

It is hoped this new format will be a better instructional method for programming, electronics and system design.  If you have children, this material is also a great resource for fun, learning and for science projects.

If you plan on selling your text/kit to students in future courses, please keep careful track of all materials and parts.

If you have problems joining the BlackBoard course or ordering, please contact me.
