I joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University in the Fall 2001. Prior to my appointment at SIU I was a Visiting Lecturer at Washington University , where I also received my Ph.D. The general goal of my research is to examine the political behavior of ordinary citizens, particularly by studying their role in elections and political parties. I have written professional papers that address the foundations of political participation, levels of voter knowledge, and the sources of individual political agendas. In addition to these substantive interests, I have theoretical and empirical interests in the role of local geography and social networks in understanding politics. I am currently working on a project that examines how communication in social networks affects levels of campaign participation. My interests are also reflected in my teaching where I teach a variety of courses on American politics and empirical methodology.
