Introduction

Logos can elicit powerful emotional and intellectual responses and some – such as the logos of the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and numerous business enterprises, for example – are among the most recognized symbols in the world.

No logo can communicate the values, vision, diversity and traditions of an organization to everyone’s satisfaction, but the frequent, standardized and prominent use of a single logo communicates a team spirit and unity of purpose that impact very favorably on an organization’s image.

This guide is intended to help establish and maintain a consistent and universally recognizable logo for Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC).

The degree to which the SIUC logo comes to symbolize the University’s rich and renewing culture of excellence in teaching, community service and research depends in large measure on the extent the logo is embraced by students, faculty, staff and alumni.
