What are the Goals of the Competition?

The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) provides institutions with an information assurance or computer security curriculum a controlled competitive environment to assess their SIU CCDC Midwest Regional Champions 2005student's depth of understanding and operational competency in managing the challenges inherent in protecting an enterprise network infrastructure and business information systems.

We intend to:

  • Build a meaningful mechanism by which institutions of higher education may evaluate their programs.
  • Provide an educational venue in which students are able to apply the theory and skills they have learned in their course work.
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork, ethical behavior, and effective communication both within and across teams.
  • Open a dialog and awareness among participating institutions, students, and sponsoring organizations.
  • Have Fun!

What Does the Competition Involve?

This competition builds on the great success of last year’s regional and national competitions. Due to the popularity of the event and a desire to allow for much greater participation, individual state competitions will be held to determine regional winners. Regional winners with compete for the national title hosted by University of Texas at San Antonio in the spring of 2005. Unlike many cyber security competitions this exercise concentrates on defense. The teams are not allowed to take the offensive. Instead SAVVIS Inc. will be organizing a professional red team to perform attacks.

The competition will involve five teams with eight students each from the top network security programs in the state. Along with Southern Illinois University, teams from the University of Illinois, Illinois State University, DePaul University, and Moraine Valley College will be hosted on the SIUC campus for this 3-day event. Each team will be given physically identical computer configurations at the start of the competition. Throughout the competition, the teams must ensure the systems supply the specified services while under attack from the red team. In addition, the teams will have to satisfy periodic "injects" that simulate business activities IT staff must deal with in the real world.

What Happens to the Winners?

The winning team will be invited to participate in the Midwest Regional Competition. They will compete against the winning teams from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio at the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance at Moraine Valley Community College on March 16-18, 2007.  Regional winners will face off for the national title at the University of Texas at San Antonio on April 13-15, 2007.

How Can I Get Involved?

This competition is an excellent opportunity to bring positive exposure to SIUC, our School, and its programs. It is an event that will allow employers, alumni, and friends an opportunity to support an exciting event and also the opportunity to help net resources that can have a long-term impact on enhancing our information security training.

We are looking for people and organizations to be involved as sponsors, judges, exercise designers, and general support staff. If you would like to be involved and/or know of contacts within your organization that could help, please contact us.
