Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture Elderhostel Program
Oaxaca, Mexico
Program Overview
Program Goals: To introduce conversational Spanish to Elderhostelers who have little or no previous experience with Spanish language; or, for those hostelers with a more extensive Spanish background, to develop a broader knowledge of the Spanish language. The program also gives participants an appreciation and understanding of the culture in this region, by introducing the hostelers to local history and customs, archeology, anthropology, and arts and crafts.
Course of Study: The Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture Elderhostel in Oaxaca consist of 1-2 hours of Spanish instruction daily. Participants have the choice of participating in the beginning, intermediate, or advanced Spanish classes. Spanish classes are complemented by evening lectures on cultural topics. Personal tutoring can be arranged outside of class. Meals, field trips, and walks are times to practice classroom conversation.
Educational Activities: Five bus trips to nearby archeological and historical sites and other points of interest are arranged. Other activities include five lectures, a folklore dance performance, and several walks to museums, galleries, markets, and other sites in the city of Oaxaca. Special holidays and festivals are included in the course of study for particular programs such as Easter, Christmas, Day of the Dead, and Guelaguetza (dance festival).
Other Activities: Free time to explore the city and sample the cuisine, galleries, Zócalo, and other personal interests. The Coordinators plan a group party with music, dance, and merriment during the final days of the program.
