2009-2010 Financial Aid Quick Guide

  1. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • The FAFSA application is used to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and determine the students' eligibility for most federal, state and institutional financial aid programs.
    • The FAFSA has deadlines! The 2009-2010 FAFSA must be completed between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.
    • Some financial aid funding is limited. The sooner you submit the FAFSA the better. You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA by April 1, 2009 to be considered for all financial aid programs.
    • Be sure to include 001758 as a federal school code so that your information is sent to SIUC.
    • Remember the FAFSA must be completed each year.
  2. You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) Acknowledgement Form as a result of completing the FAFSA.
    • Review the SAR for necessary corrections.
    • Contact us for correction procedures.
    • Some students/families will be asked to provide tax returns and other documents to verify the information submitted on the FAFSA.
  3. The SIUC Financial Aid Office will prepare your electronic Financial Aid Award Letter.
    • You must be admitted to SIUC for a Financial Aid Award Letter to be produced.
    • You must have completed a FAFSA and submitted all requested information.
    • Your Financial Aid Award Letter is posted on SalukiNet for your review.
    • You will receive notification when it is prepared.
    • You will need your SIUC PIN to enter SalukiNet.
  4. Review your electronic Financial Aid Award Letter on SalukiNet and Accept or Reject the awards as indicated.
(Click here if you do not already have a PIN number to sign in to SalukiNet)
    • Depending on the type of aid you accept, you may need to complete additional steps below.
  5. If you did not qualify for enough financial aid to meet your needs, you might consider:
    • Student Employment
    • PLUS Loan - If your parent wants to complete a PLUS Loan application, they will need:
      • SIUC PLUS (form will be available after April 1, 2009)
      • PLUS Master Promissory Note (PLUS Loan MPN)
    • Alternative Loan - SIUC processes Alternative Loans for students and/or parents for whom traditional loan programs do not meet the full need. Because of the potential for higher costs associated with these loans, they should only be considered whenever all other options have been exhausted!
    • You may request a Revision of Aid Offered (form will be available after April 1, 2009)
