The Influence of Darwin on Philosophy and Other Essays in Contemporary
Thought Editor: Larry A. Hickman Publication Date: 2007 Publisher: SIU Press Link: SIU Press Synopsis: Published originally in 1897 The Influence of Darwin on Philosophy is of seminal importance to Deweyan philosophy and was included in a collection of essays Dewey compiled in 1910. That compilation was divided when The Collected Works was organized chronologically. This single volume is a definitive edition of Dewey’s original preface and essays, including poignant contextual material in the form of scholarly introductions, responses by Dewey’s contemporaries, textual commentaries, and emendations lists. On September 17, 1941, Will Durant wrote to Dewey that “a century hence, when Mars is tired and Minerva returns, students will pore again over your Influence of Darwin and will struggle back to the independence of mind and spirit which marked that book and its time.” This certainly seems prophetic as evidenced by the contemporary relevancy of these essays. |
