"Democracy has many meanings, but if it has a moral meaning, it is found in resolving that the supreme test of all political institutions and industrial arrangements shall be the contribution they make to the all-around growth of every member of society.
"

The Collected Works of John Dewey, 1882-1953, edited by Jo Ann Boydston (Carbondale and Edwardsville: Southern Illinois University Press, 1967-1991), MW 12:186.

About the Center's Resources and Operation
The Center houses photocopies of over 22,000 pieces of correspondence to, from, and about John Dewey arranged in an electronic database, which allows for detailed searches by word or phrase.  Dewey's published writings are contained in a thirty-seven-volume set titled The Collected Works of John Dewey.  This collection exists both in print form and also in a searchable electronic database. The Center houses thousands of secondary works about Dewey, the titles of which have been arranged in a searchable bibliographic index.  The Center also has audio/visual media, photographs, biographical and bibliographical materials, and newspaper articles that deal with Dewey's life and work.

Dewey's papers, original versions of his manuscripts, his professional library, photographs, and memorabilia are housed in the Special Collections Research Center at Morris Library on the SIUC campus.  Morris Library is within walking distance of the Dewey Center. If you would like to view items in Special Collections during your visit, you will need to contact Special Collections for an appointment.  Click here to visit the Special Collections website.

The Center is open year round except for university recognized holidays.  Our hours are 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Visitors have access to computers for their research and staff are always available to answer questions.

If you plan to visit the Center, please contact James Downhour.
