"Looking back over many years and looking ahead to the future which in many respects is so uncertain, I am convinced that the possibility of a free, prosperous and creative culture is bound up with the fruitful interrelation and cooperation of these three ideals - labor, as representing the solidarity of all progressive forces, education, as the enlightenment necessary for action, and science, as the method of extending the boundaries of knowledge and providing the means of making action intelligent and effective."

The Collected Works of John Dewey, 1882-1953, edited by Jo Ann Boydston (Carbondale and Edwardsville: Southern Illinois University Press, 1967-1991), LW 14:311.

The Center for Dewey Studies serves to disseminate Dewey's philosophy of actively engaging with communities and interested individuals. For its efforts the Center and its works have received both praise and awards.
