Jane Adams is a Professor of Anthropology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her research focuses on the transformation of rural life, focusing on southern Illinois. She was co-PI on a multi-year interdisciplinary project dealing with watershed management in the Cache River, Illinois, basin. Her current research, collaborating with photographer D. Gorton, focuses on the Farm Security Administration resettlement projects in the Delta of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri, and on how white people in the region negotiated the profound changes of the post-WWII period. Her research has resulted in three books and numerous journal articles.
In addition to her scholarly work, she has worked with migrant education, farm crisis support in the 1980s, and promoting sustainable agriculture. In the 1960s she participated in the Freedom Movement in Mississippi as a COFO-led Freedom Summer Volunteer and as staff on the COFO Federal Programs Project. She is currently active in her neighborhood association.
