Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is proposing to offer a Bachelor of Science degree program in Aviation Management at Southwestern Illinois College: Belleville, IL. Results of the following interest survey will help SIUC learn more about the potential student base and provide us with enough information to determine if the student base will be adequate to support such a venture. Should there be a sufficient interest in the program; classes will begin spring semester 2008.

The Program

The Aviation Management (AVM) degree includes a 48 semester-hour major, 41 semester-hour University Core Curriculum (UCC) (general education), and a 31 semester-hour approved career electives component for a total of 120 semester hours. The UCC can be satisfied by transfer credit from other institutions, and the 31 hours of career electives can be satisfied by acceptance of aviation related technical training or related course work such as FAA certification or aviation military tech schools.

SIUC proposes to deliver the 48 semester-hour AVM major at Southwestern Illinois College, using a weekend format that spans a sixteen-month period of time. Each semester includes four, 3 semester hour courses. Three of the courses are taught in class Saturday and Sunday, every other weekend. Each of these classes meets for 3 weekends. The fourth class is an independent studies course and spans the length of the semester. Students who enroll full-time (12 semester hours) each of four consecutive semester are able to complete the 48 semester-hour major in 16 months.

SIUC’s tuition is $180.00 per semester-hour. All SIUC courses are eligible for tuition assistance and the Veterans Administration educational benefits. SIUC’s on-site staff will assist students who wish to apply for PELL Grants or Student Loans.
