FOR ALL MCAS, NEW RIVER, NC INSTRUCTORS FOR 2010

Welcome to MCAS, New River @ Jacksonville, NC! We currently have two programs offered at New River: Aviation Management and Electronic Systems Technologies. Health Care Management is offered at nearby Camp Lejeune.

Please confirm your teaching dates and class with me: slangham@siu.edu. Traditionally, we expect 25 – 30 EST or 20 -25 AVM students in your class. All students have been advised that they should have a current textbook, and will be given your syllabi 2-3 weeks prior to the beginning of class, provided it is available.

Please submit your syllabus to Doreen Hees, OCAP Office Manager, (618-453-7275, asaocap@siu.edu), at campus for approval prior to duplication and distribution. If you need to have copies of your syllabi, handouts, and/or exams made, please send materials to campus, also to the attention of Doreen Hees, per the Faculty Guide .

I respectfully request your materials available at our office 4 weeks in advance of the class start date, to assure timely distribution to students. I would further like to request an electronic copy of your syllabi sent (email attachment) to my email address: slangham@siu.edu . Please verify your contact information (including cell phone number) as well as your travel itinerary.

As campus has discontinued the practice of copying and mailing Power Point Presentations, it is likewise requested that you send an electronic (email attachment) copy to me for distribution directly to students and posting to the OCAP – New River website. If you will be mailing your copied syllabus and exams/handouts directly to us, please forward to:

NOTE: There is no provision for copying or printing at this location on the weekends. Please prepare accordingly and by campus guidelines.

Your classroom is located in Bldg. AS 212. The EST classroom is 121A, located on the first floor; AVM classroom is 222B, located on the second floor, and my office is 212, also located on the second floor. I will visit your class for approximately 15 minutes, usually on the first and third Saturdays of class, and typically at the beginning of class to make necessary announcements.

Available to you is the following equipment: Toshiba/NEC Projector System, Dell Laptop, and a DVD Player. There are either Television/VCR combinations in each classroom or a SMART system, available for SIUC use. The building is now wireless capable, but our laptops are not.

Your hotel reservations have been made at the BAYMONT INN of Jacksonville, NC, (formerly Hampton Inn of Jacksonville) located at 474 Western Blvd. The telephone number: (910) 347-6500. Your reservation is under Southern Illinois University and your name, and covers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, all three weekends. If you do not require all of these days, please amend your reservation on the first weekend, upon arrival. We will need credit card information from you as soon as possible to secure/guarantee your reservation for late arrival. Your room rate is $99 plus tax. If you wish to stay at an alternate location, please prepare the reservations as you wish, and inform me so that I may cancel those which have been previously secured at Baymont Inn by our office.

We will leave a manila envelope for you at the front desk of the BAYMONT INN of Jacksonville, NC, (formerly Hampton Inn of Jacksonville), usually by 5:00 PM on Friday afternoon. Please pick it up as soon as you arrive. It will contain your rosters for the weekend (please be sure to sign each one), a map to our building, keys to our building, classrooms storage areas, and any last minute information necessary for your teaching assignment. Please leave this envelope, with the rosters, keys, and any instructions necessary to assist students who have missed any class time enclosed, under my office door before departing each weekend. If you will be staying in town Sunday evening and will be leaving additional items, please keep the envelope enclosed with my name on it for that purpose, and leave it at the front desk of the BAYMONT INN of Jacksonville (formerly Hampton Inn of Jacksonville) before departing each weekend.

We do not have a SIU vehicle at this location, therefore, you will need to make arrangements for a rental car. Perhaps this can be done along with your airline reservations. Please allow sufficient time for arrival at airports in your travels. We have been assured that the Albert J. Ellis Airport here in the Jacksonville area requires an early arrival of at least 90 minutes prior to all flights. Some car rental companies at the Albert J. Ellis airport close prior to the final flight of the evening. Please plan accordingly.

Under the current conditions of military readiness, our base is operating under a specific threat condition. This will require you to have identification available, as well as all rental car paperwork. Please be aware that you may be required to submit to a search of the vehicle you are driving. Please allow extra time each morning for this purpose.

On the first Saturday or Sunday of the semester only, our Independent Study Instructors will need to meet with students. Please dismiss all students from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, to attend these once-a-semester meetings. This period will allow for a at least one hour lunch break for each student. I will verify with you the exact day in the near future.

Final, signed grade reports for your class are due to campus via Banner, and our office within 10 days of the end date of class. Specific dates are available in the Faculty Guidelines Package provided from campus. There is a new system for inputting grades into the Banner system at campus. This does not replace the need at the base for a hard copy, signed by the instructor. It is imperative that you be prompt with grades, as without final grades on file, our students are denied further Marine Corps/Navy/Air Force/Army Tuition Assistance for the next class.

In the event of an emergency while teaching at New River, or en route, please contact me at the office: (910) 449-6250 from 9 AM – 3 PM Monday – Thursday, and 9 AM – 12:30 PM Fridays. After hours, I can be reached at home: (see welcome letter) or cell: (see welcome letter). Please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible, or I will handle the situation directly. Campus contact information:
