FOR ALL MCAS NEW RIVER, NC INSTRUCTORS:

Welcome! We currently have two programs offered at New River: Aviation Management and Electronic Systems Technologies. Health Care Management is offered at nearby Camp Lejeune.

Please confirm your teaching dates for all classes. Traditionally, we expect 25–30 EST or 20-24 AVM students in your class. All students have been advised that they should have a current textbook, and will be given your syllabi at least 2 weeks prior to the beginning of class. If you
will be mailing your copied syllabus and exams/handouts directly to us, please forward to:

Mailing Address:
SIUC
P.O. Box 4299
Jacksonville , NC 28540-0299

UPS Address:
SIUC Bldg. AS-212
Office 212, MCAS New River
Jacksonville , NC 28545

If you need to have copies of your syllabi, handouts, and/or exams made, please send materials to campus to the attention of Betty Bishop, per the Faculty Guide . I respectfully request your materials available at our office 4 weeks in advance of the class start date, to assure timely distribution to students. I would further like to request a copy of your syllabi sent as an attachment to email to my address: slangham@siu.edu . As campus has discontinued the practice of copying and mailing Power Point Presentations, it is likewise requested that you send an electronic (email attachment) copy to me for distribution directly to students. NOTE: There is no provision for copying at this location on the weekends. Please prepare accordingly and by campus guidelines.

Your classroom is located in Bldg. AS-212 - EST classroom - 121A, first floor, and AVM
classroom - 222B, second floor. I will visit your class for approximately 15 minutes on the first and third Saturday of class. I usually come in at the beginning of the day to make announcements. Available to you on each teaching weekend is the following equipment: 3M Overhead Projector, Toshiba/NEC Projector System, Dell Laptop (one does not have CD drive), DVD player, and a Zennith Television. There are also Television/VCR combinations installed in each classroom that is available for SIUC use.

Your hotel reservations have been made at the Hampton Inn of Jacksonville, NC, located at 474 Western Blvd. The telephone number: (910) 347-6500. Your reservation/confirmation number is under Southern Illinois University (84433671 for 2008 reservations) and your reservation covers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, all three weekends. If you do not require all of these days, please amend your reservation on the first weekend, upon arrival. We will need credit card information from you as soon as possible to secure your reservation for late arrival. Your reservation will show up under your name once your credit card information is on hand. If by chance, your reservation does not show up in your name, please check under SIU/Southern Illinois University. Your room rate is $99 plus tax.If you wish to stay at an alternate location, please prepare the reservations as you wish, and inform me so that I may cancel those which have been made previously by our office.

We will leave a manila envelope for you at the front desk of the Hampton Inn, usually by 5:00 PM on Friday afternoon. Please pick it up as soon as you arrive. It will contain your rosters for the weekend (please be sure to sign each one), a map to our building, keys to our building and storage area, and any last minute information necessary for your teaching assignment. Please leave the envelope at the front desk upon checkout with the rosters, keys, and any instructions necessary to assist students who have missed any class time. Do not leave building/classroom keys with the Student Liaison.

We do not have an SIU vehicle at this location, therefore, you will need to make arrangements for a rental car. Perhaps this can be done along with your airline reservations. Please allow sufficient time for arrival at airports in your travels. We have been assured that the Albert J. Ellis Airport here in the Jacksonville area requires an early arrival of at least 90 minutes prior to all flights.

Under the current conditions of military readiness, our base is operating under specific threat condition. This will require you to have identification available, as well as all rental car paperwork. Please be aware that you may be required to submit to a search of the vehicle you are driving. Please allow extra time each morning for this purpose.

On the first Saturday of the semester only, our Independent Study Instructor, Steve Solesbee, will need to meet with students from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The alternating use of this time will allow student meetings with that instructor as well as the lunch break. Please let me know if this will cause any difficulties for you.

Final grades for your class are due to campus and our office within 10 days of the end date of class. Specific dates are available in the Faculty Guidelines Package provided from campus. It is imperative that you be prompt with grades, as without final grades on file, our students are denied further Marine Corps/Navy/Air Force/Army Tuition Assistance for the next class.

In the event of an emergency while teaching at New River, or en route, please contact me at the office: (910) 449-6250 or (910) 451-5575 from 9 AM to 3 PM daily, Monday – Thursday, 9 AM – 1 PM Fridays. After hours, I can be reached at home: (910) 346-4595 or (910) 346-3636 or Cell: (910) 381-0526. I will return your call as soon as possible, or I will handle the situation directly.

I hope you will find your stay in Jacksonville enjoyable and pleasant. I look forward to meeting and working with you this semester.

Thank you,

Susan Langham,
Program Advisor
