Special Note on Oracle Reports Feature
A new feature is now available on your campus to improve the viewing and processing of AIS reports using Microsoft Word (97 or higher). This feature is the "OracleReports" add-in to MS Word.
Background: AIS uses MS Word (97 or higher) as a "viewer" for reports. Using MS Word in this way allows users to read the reports online, print them to available printers in the department, and save them for future use. Previous training showed you how to use MS Word's basic editing features to reorient reports (e.g., change them from portrait to landscape), change font sizes, and add page breaks. While completely functional, this approach is greatly simplified by using the new "OracleReports" feature. This note provides information on obtaining and using that feature.
Installation of OracleReports: OracleReports is an add-in to MS Word. To install it, you must be able to add files to your set-up of the MS Word program (that is, have "read/ write" access to the program's start up directory). This is always the case when your copy of MS Word is installed on your computer's hard drive. If your MS Word is installed on a networked server, please ask your network staff to assist you in the installation.
To install OracleReports, please do the following:
-
Download the OracleReports' installation program (orm-msw.exe) to your computer. You use the installation program to add OracleReports to your copy of MS Word.
-
After clicking on the download program's web address, a "Save As" window will appear. You are being asked where to place the OracleReports installation program on your computer. (For example, C:\TEMP\WORD.) You may place the installation program wherever you wish, but be sure to write down where you place it.
-
Once you have downloaded the installation program, use Windows Explorer (or whatever process you typically use to locate files on your system) to locate the installation program.
-
Double click on the installation program (the orm-msw.exe file ) and follow all instructions.
-
To successfully complete the installation process, the OracleReports installation program searches for MS Word's "executable" file on your computer. This file, "winword.exe", normally exists on your computer's hard drive in a file folder directly placed there by the MS Word installation program. If OracleReports can find the executable file, it will successfully complete its installation. If not, you will receive an error message stating that Microsoft Word does not appear to be installed on your system or its start-up directory cannot be located. If you receive this error message, refer to the Technical Note on Installation.
-
Start MS Word as you typically would. If your installation effort was successful, you will see the "OracleReports" option on your MS Word menu. If not, the installation was unsuccessful; in this case, read and follow the Technical Note on Installation instructions.
Technical Note on Installation:
If you receive an error during installation of OracleReports, it is either because MS Word (97 or higher) has not been installed OR the OracleReports installation program cannot locate and save to MS Word's start-up directory. Verify the presence of MS Word; make sure that the software is correctly installed and functioning.
If that is the case, then you need to copy the OracleReports file ("MS Word - Oracle Format.dot") to the MS Word starting directory. To do this, you must have read/ write access to the MS Word start-up directory. The OracleReports installation program has placed the Oracle Reports file ("MS Word - Oracle Format.dot") in your Windows temp directory (e.g. c:\Windows\Temp) in case you need to manually copy it to your MS Word start-up directory. Copy that file to the startup directory for MS Word (e.g. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup). This will complete the OracleReports installation.
