Browser Recommendations
Across all SIU campuses, various browsers (and versions within them) are being used to access the AIS applications. While the AIS office recommends using only browsers which have been certified by Oracle Corporation, the reality is that Oracle is not quick to certify new browser releases, sometimes taking months after a new release is available. Accordingly and as resources allow, the AIS office tests new browsers or versions and will share results with the campuses as to any problems while using the AIS applications. While use of an Oracle certified browser/version is preferred, users may also use any browser/version which the AIS office has tested and found to be compatible with the AIS applications.
Oracle has not addressed Browser certification for application releases other than 11i. The prior AIS standard for release 11.0.3 was Netscape 4.8.x (x being 3 or greater). The AIS office has upgraded and tested browsers to include IE 6.0, Netscape 7.0.2, Netscape 7.1 and 7.2. While Oracle has not certified Netscape beyond 4.8.x for applications 11.0.3, there are no known problems with AIS usage and therefore, users should feel comfortable to continue to use Netscape, up to and including release 7.2.
Netscape 8.0 is too new to the market for AIS to conduct any testing to date. As AIS tests with Netscape 8.0, we will update this information page accordingly. For any user who may already be using Netscape 8.0, please alert the AIS office if you experience any browser related problems while using the current AIS applications.
The AIS office is aware that at least some SIUC campus departments have already migrated strictly to Internet Explorer and are not experiencing any access problems.
For those working with the AIS office during the 11.5.10 upgrade and for all users once the upgrade has been completed, here is the most current information on Browsers.
The Browsers for Windows XP are as follows:
| Firefox | Version 1.0.4+ | Status: Certified |
| Version 1.5+ | Status: Certified | |
| Microsoft Internet Explorer | Version 6.0 | Status: Certified |
| Mozilla | Version 1.7.5 | Status: Certified |
| Netscape Navigator | Version 7.2 | Status: Certified |
Recently, Microsoft has made available a new release of Internet Explorer, version 7.x. Some of you may have already updated IE to this new release. If you have done so, please know this current status for AIS. If you have not yet updated IE to 7.x, please delay until further notice.
The new release of IE 7.x comes after all testing of the AIS upgrade version has been completed. A review of the Oracle Support web page shows IE 7.x as NOT YET CERTIFIED. This means Oracle has not completed testing of IE 7.x with the version of the applications used by SIU. We already know of at least one problem caused by IE 7.x, but have found a work-around for it. It is possible, other problems have not yet been found. Therefore, please delay an update to IE 7.x until further notice. Turn off any automatic upgrade of IE until AIS has an opportunity to gain more experience using IE 7.x. Thank you.
Please Note: If you have already updated IE to version 7.x and you experience a problem using AIS, please let us know immediately. We will try to help you.
The Browsers for Apple Mac OS 10 are as follows:
| Apple Java | Version 1.3.1 | Status: Certified |
| Microsoft Internet Explorer | Version 5.2.2 | Status: Certified |
There are specific recommendations for browser settings and patches. This information will be shared with staff assigned to work with the AIS office on the 11.5.10 upgrade. Once everything is ready for the upgrade to be activated, this information will be shared with all AIS users.
