The Nollywood Project
research design has three phases. The first was a pre-pilot
study completed in 2005.
The second is a systematic pilot study beginning in 2006. Nollywood
project researchers will conduct prelliminary ethnographic research in
Nigeria. We will also begin an archive of research resources on
Nollywoood.
The third phase, beginning in 2007, will be a thorough ethnographic and
economic analysis of the West African video industry and its potential.
At every stage of the project we seek collaboration with both industry
professionals and academic researchers in Nigeria and selected other
African nations. |
Phase II is
a pilot study that culminates with an intensive
2-3
day working seminar at SIUC Carbondale. At
this time we will convene a core group of industry professionals and
academic specialists from North America and West Africa to explore the
potential of the video industry to contribute to economic growth,
reform of governance, health care, education, peace and related issues.
We
will continue extensive and systematic study extended to include Kanu,
Ibadan, and Niamey working with a network of collaborators in the field |
Phase III will
consist of linked in-depth ethnographic studies of audiences and
reception with particular reference to gender, economic status, and
ethnicity. Areas of focus will include production processes, popular
reception of the movies, and analysis of the industry’s multiplier
effect on the local and national economy. Each study will engage with
relevant issues of justice, governance, and trade. The pilot studies
will amplify and enrich both our concepts and research methods at this
stage. We anticipate these studies will be conducted over a period of
two years and will harness the energies of doctoral students at
Southern Illinois University as well as select faculty and students at
other institutions and in the African nations involved. The third phase
will conclude with a major conference held in Lagos, Nigeria. |
