Assistant Instructors/Instructors (Assistant Teacher)

Description of the Position:  (One or More Early Childhood Education Positions as Funds Permit)  Instructor or Assistant Instructor position(s) in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Responsibilities include serving as Assistant Teacher in the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs with three and four year old children in a public school or community-based prekindergarten classroom.

Responsibilities of the Position:

  1. Serve as a model of early childhood professionalism through interactions with the children, parents, and staff members, teaching practices, planning, and involvement in professional activities.
  2. Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate early childhood program in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
  3. Cooperate in the development of family involvement and family literacy programs.
  4. Participate in appropriate training and/or university coursework as needs are identified and required.
  5. Collaborate in Child Find activities.
  6. Demonstrate participation in professional activities.
  7. In collaboration with the Lead Teacher, maintain portfolios reflective of the development of the children.
  8. Serve as a liaison between the school district(s) or community-based early childhood programs and the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs.
  9. Collaborate with the Lead Teacher in the collection of evaluation and research information.
  10. Participate in the annual performance review.

Requirements for the Position:

  1. The position requires a Baccalaureate Degree in Early Childhood Education; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Elementary Education with preschool or kindergarten experience; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Child Development; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Child and Family Services. (A Baccalaureate Degree in Special
    Education with early childhood special education endorsement may be considered.)
  2. Persons applying for the position must hold a philosophical orientation consistent with developmentally appropriate educational practices as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
  3. Participation in and contribution to professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels are highly desirable.
  4. Oral proficiency in the English language is required by Illinois state law.
  5. Candidates must be willing to obtain Type 04 certification, if applicable.

Appointment and Salary:  This is a term appointment. Service in the position does not count toward tenure. This appointment is for a ten month period of time. Continuation in the position will depend on performance and the extension of funding by the Illinois State Board of Education.

This is a security sensitive position.  Prior to any offer of employment a pre-employment background investigation, which includes a criminal background check, will be conducted.

Effective Date of Employment:  Appointment dates are open. Position vacancies will be filled as needs arise for the Academic Year 08-09.
