Assistant Instructors/Instructors (Family Educator - Prevention Initiative)
Department of Curriculum and Instruction


Description of Position:  (One or More Positions as Funds Permit)  Instructor or Assistant Instructor position(s) in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to serve as Family Educator(s) for the Southern Region Early Childhood Programs. Responsibilities include implementing a Prevention Initiative Program serving at-risk children birth to age three and their families.

Requirements of the Applicant:

  1. The position requires a Baccalaureate Degree with a specialty in one of the following: Early Childhood Education (preferably with Type 04 teaching certification and/or Early Childhood Special Education Approval), Child Development, Child and Family Services, Social Work, or other fields related to early childhood or health education.
  2. Recent experience working with infants and toddlers and their families is required.
  3. A philosophical orientation consistent with developmentally appropriate practice as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young children and Parents as Teachers is necessary.
  4. Evidence of successful experience and leadership in establishing partnerships within schools and communities in support of families with young children is necessary.
  5. Contributions to professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels are highly valued.
  6. Oral proficiency in the English language is required by Illinois state law.

Duties of the Position:

  1. Plan a developmentally appropriate program for children birth to age three and their families based upon best practices as defined by NAEYC and the Parents as Teachers models.
  2. Implement the program which includes intensive home visits and forming partnerships with parents, schools, and community groups, including hospitals and other health organizations.
  3. Recruit and enroll parents in the last trimester of pregnancy and parents with children ages birth to age three.
  4. Develop and implement an Individual Family Service Plan with each family.
  5. Integrate family literacy throughout all aspects of the program.
  6. Serve as a model of professionalism through interactions with children, parents, community and school partners, and other program staff.
  7. Assume responsibility for completing and submitting documentation as determined appropriate by the Illinois State Board of Education and the program.
  8. Participate in professional development experiences, including university course work, as appropriate for the position.


Appointment and Salary:  This is a term appointment. Service in the position does not count toward tenure.  The appointment is full-time for a ten month period of time and part-time for two months. Continuation in the position is contingent upon performance and extension of funding.

This is a security sensitive position.  Prior to any offer of employment a pre-employment background investigation, which includes a criminal background check, will be conducted.

Effective Date of Employment:  Appointment dates are open. Position vacancies will be filled as needs arise for the Academic Year 08-09.
