Legacy of SIU

Historical Resources

Alumni Association

The SIU Alumni Association was formed in 1896 to serve the University, graduates, and former students. There are approximately 213,000 alumni in the United States and around the world. Communication with our alumni is crucial to the organization's mission, and there are several vehicles in place to stay connected to our vast audience. Southern Alumni magazine provides four issues per year to all Association members, with the December issue sent to all alumni of record. Also in the communication family is Saluki Pride, an informational newsletter sent twice each year to all members of the Association. Timely events, news releases, basic information on the organization, and on-line registration is offered at siualumni.com, plugging Southern alumni into the World Wide Web.

Institutional Research and Studies

Institutional Research and Studies’ mission is to provide the University management with information that supports institutional planning, policy formation and decision making. In addition, our unit is in charge of reporting data about the University to a myriad of external constituencies.

The Institutional Research unit at SIUC had its beginnings in the late 1960s. The Unit Cost Study was one of the first processes that the office was responsible. Our web site is a comprehensive source of information and provides current as well as historical data about the University’s enrollments, student demographics, faculty and staff, budget and finance, academic programs, and the library.

U. S. Grant Association

Victories in the Civil War made Ulysses S. Grant a national figure and propelled him into the White House. Until recently, however, historians and biographers have found him to be an elusive and controversial subject. For decades, basic documents necessary to understand this complex figure--Grant's correspondence, military and government papers, and other important materials--remained scattered in libraries, archives, and private collections. Now, the Ulysses S. Grant Association is assembling these documents in an edition that presents authentic texts to the general public as well as to specialists.
