Completed renovations of Altgeld Hall, and other campus projects included in the Future is Now.

Modernization need not obscure tradition and history, and a 20,000-square-foot expansion and renovation project enhanced the character of this historic 1896 building while also providing School of Music faculty and students with vastly improved facilities.

Project highlights include

  • A new opera/music theater rehearsal room with a wooden floor and mirrored walls.
  • A sound booth and recording studio attached to the band and orchestra rehearsal rooms.
  • Small and medium-sized practice spaces.
  • Class and seminar rooms.
  • Three musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) laboratories for computer music composition.
  • A new choir room with built-in risers, acoustical curtains and suspended ceiling “clouds” that deaden noise.
  • Project cost: $13.4 million.
  • Funding source: State of Illinois
