Loudspeakers exist in a number of buildings on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus including:

Recreation Center
Student Center
Brush Towers
Student Health Center
SIU Arena

In the event of an emergency, a loudspeaker system may be used to convey SIUC Alerts and/or other information.

SIUC Alerts are messages about an emergency. The message may alert you to an emergency situation, ask you to take action, or both. Some weather warnings including flash flood, severe thunderstorm, winter storm, and tornado warnings will also be sent as an SIUC Alert. The messages are short (only 160 characters long). For more detailed information, you may need to go to another source of University emergency information.

Please note that there are also warning sirens for campus and the City of Carbondale. These are activated by the City of Carbondale Emergency Management Services. For additional information, visit: www.ci.carbondale.il.us/EmergencySafety/emergency_mgmt_services.html

Please note that no communication distribution method, including loudspeakers, is infallible. For that reason, SIUC uses redundant systems of emergency communication, including telephone, web, e-mail, radio, and person-to person, to distribute news and instructions during an emergency.
