At SIUC, our scientists delve deeper every day, exploring
the mysteries of the biological, chemical,
mathematical and
physical characteristics of our world and the universe.
We vigorously encourage our students to begin
working early with faculty scientists and to present
their research projects and papers.
Students travel to the polar ice caps, some to Central
American or Amazonian rain forests. Others turn their
attentions inward, exploring nanotechnology,
numbers theory, computer technology or the human body.
An insatiable quest for knowledge fires imaginations and
minds of all great scientists. We understand this. So we
entrust the vital job of teaching only to accomplished
scientists and researchers in our college.
Every advance and discovery made by our faculty and students
expands the collective knowledge that frames a current understanding
of our world.
Earth Sciences for High Schools
An informal earth science program, Basics in Geology is for
students in local junior and senior high schools. This unique
outreach
program began in 1995 as an experimental extension to
the normal outreach efforts of SIUC's geology department.
Illinois Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
The Illinois Junior Science & Humanities Symposium is
a
regional competition conducted under the auspices of the
national program. The primary goal is to promote research
and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and
mathematics at the high school level.
Math Field Day
High school math students from four states crunch numbers
at
SIUC's annual Math Field Day. Held at the SIU Arena, the
competition
challenges students to solve problems in areas that range
from algebra and trigonometry to pre-calculus and calculus.
Region 8 Science Fair
Hundreds of junior high and high school students from
across Southern Illinois show their science projects on campus
each year. They compete for several thousand dollars
in prize money and coveted opportunities to advance to the
state science fair competition. Student investigations fall
under 18 project categories, including aerospace, behavioral
science, health science and zoology.
Computer Science Day
High school students learn about various facets of this
rapidly evolving field and compete in a Web page design
contest. SIUC faculty members lead sessions about computer
security and fundamentals and Web development.
Our particular strengths include:

- Scholarships just for science majors
- Small class
sizes
- Classes for majors taught by faculty members
with doctoral degrees

beginning at the undergraduate level
- Forensic chemistry specialization; leading-edge materials chemistry research
- The
state’s only four-year zoology
degree program; certified
by The Wildlife Society
- One
of nation’s best geology field programs
- Computer
science program produces graduates sought for top information
technology jobs all over the world
- Full campus
complement of student clubs, national professional associations
and organizations
Located a short distance from a flourishing national
forest, the Cache River biosphere, a national wildlife refuge,
lakes, bluffs and two of our nation’s most influential
rivers —
the College of Science focuses on the objective discovery
of
knowledge in a full spectrum of specialties.
We offer a wide array of majors including
- biological sciences

- chemistry
- computer science
- geology
- mathematics
- microbiology
- physics
- physiology
- plant biology
- zoology
Our pre-health profession major is an ideal choice for students
who wish to go on to become doctors, dentists, nurses,
optometrists, pharmacists, physical therapists or podiatrists.
Our graduate programs are linked with the University’s
top-flight research centers for plant biology, electron
microscopy, materials technology, wildlife research, fisheries
and aquaculture.
Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment,
the blueprint for the long-range growth of SIUC specifies
aspirations on which our college continues to build. These
include:
- Become the best student-responsive
research university in Illinois
- Because of increased funding, more and more undergraduate
students are involved in cutting edge research
projects in their disciplines.
- Strengthen
the undergraduate scholarship program
- Students
in science are among the best and the brightest.
The College of Science is working with the University
to increase scholarship awards our students receive
as incoming freshmen and as continuing students.
- Maintain
a high-quality faculty
- Great students deserve great
teachers. At SIUC students continue to receive
outstanding classroom instruction by faculty
noted for both teaching and scholarship.
There are many ways to support the College of
Science and a variety of levels
of commitment. Donors may contribute to:
- Endowed chairs, professorships, and faculty fellowships
- Endowed
and general scholarships
- Centers and facilities
- Gifts in kind of equipment
and services
