Our
College
Media are more dynamic today than perhaps at any time
in history, rapidly evolving on a global scale with new
technology, theory and practices, transforming both those who practice
in the
field and their audiences. Our College of Mass Communication
and
Media Arts meets those challenges with modern
facilities, forwardthinking
faculty and a hands-on philosophy.
Our faculty provides students with a solid foundation of
media history
while leading the way in traditional and emerging fields.
Students learn
how various platforms – print,
cinema, electronic, broadcast and
photographic – stand alone. And they discover how those
areas
are converging and forming a new media environment. In the
New
Media Center, students use state-of-the-art
technology to
produce a
wide variety of multi-media projects.
Inside newsrooms, laboratories, a soundstage,
studios and
broadcast
facilities, students can receive hands-on experience in professional
media environments. We help obtain valuable internships with
top
organizations and media companies and our students annually
win
numerous state and national college-level media awards. Our
student-produced Alt.News 26:46, a monthly TV news magazine,
has captured 18 Emmys in competition with professional productions. Most importantly, our students graduate with quality experience
and
portfolios in addition to a valuable diploma.
Strong on Academics
The divisions within our college offer a full array of choices
for
media students.
The Department of Cinema and Photography provides an in-depth,
demanding approach to cinematic, photographic and multimedia
communication, expression and critique. Students are grounded
in
the social, cultural, critical
and ideological implications of our use of
still and moving image media. The annual Big
Muddy Film Festival is an international event with competition screenings, documentary
and narrative feature screenings, panel discussions and guest
presentations of independent, non-traditional films.
The School of Journalism is a nationally accredited program
that
provides students with a broad knowledge of the liberal arts
while
introducing them to the practice of journalism in modern
society.
Students complete degrees in advertising/integrated
marketing communications, news-editorial and photojournalism, while
preparing for productive professional careers. The school’s
“hands-on” tradition continues through the Daily
Egyptian, one of
the premiere daily college newspapers in the country. The
paper
began in 1916.
Students in the Department of Radio-Television can specialize
in
audio production, broadcast news,
marketing and management, and video production. Radio-Television has its own record
label,
high-definition video production equipment, audio mastering
facilities and video editing suites. Students from the department
produce the River Region Evening
Edition newscast that is
broadcast live on WSIU Public Television.
Strong on Service
Faculty and staff in the
college are committed to national, regional and local service.
Faculty serve on the boards of prestigious national and international
organizations, provideregional service through outreach activities,
and work with local organizations and clients to produce
media for a variety of uses.
WSIU Public Broadcasting operates Public Broadcasting
Service (PBS) television stations and National Public Radio
(NPR) radio stations. WSIU provides innovative
programs and services that foster
educational, civic and personal development. WSIU has been nationally recognized for its
“Ready to Learn” early childhood services and
is a founding
partner of ChalkWaves Plus, a digital K-12 service for
teachers and students. The station participates in community
projects aimed at issues such as Alzheimer’s disease,
child
protection, adult and family literacy, and civic responsibility.
Each academic unit in the college has its own academic
adviser. In addition, there is an adviser for incoming freshmen
and students in the college who have not yet chosen a
major. Students in the college are kept informed of upcoming
events, scholarships and deadlines through the college’s
undergraduate and graduate listservs and Web site.
Strong on Research
Our graduate faculty is a community of scholars,
professionals and artists actively engaged in understanding,
critiquing and creating media. Our college-wide graduate
programs, which include doctoral, master
of fine arts, master of arts and master
of science degrees, provide an
integrated study of the media that combines theory and
practice with the arts, the humanities and the social sciences.

The Global Media Research Center was founded in 2004 to
expand the traditionally strong international focus of the
college in research. Its mission is to develop
studies of global
media in fresh and significant directions. It also seeks
to
foster ongoing interaction between academic research and
both creative and professional media practice. It hosts visiting
postdoctoral fellows as well as a regular speaker series
and
screening series.
