The
College of Education and Human Services is committed
to quality teaching and research. Through classroom
and field work, faculty and staff
prepare human
services professionals, teachers and education
leaders. Each year, the college places 400
student teachers
in classrooms throughout Southern Illinois.
Students also prepare for careers as athletics trainers,
therapeutic
recreation specialists, speech pathologists and social workers,
to name just a few of our majors. Each year, hundreds of
professionals also select the college for graduate study
at either
the master’s or doctoral level.
Research and service projects in the college span a broad
spectrum,
ranging from autisum disorders to An
Adventure of the American Mind. In-service and pre-service classroom teachers and college
teacher education faculty access, use and produce curriculum
utilizing the online collections of the Library of Congress.
The college combines scholarship and service with health,
social
welfare and other human service agencies. Professionals earning
undergraduate and graduate degrees and post-graduate
certificates engage in a wide range of health and health-related
issues. They include
- child and family services
- community and school health
- coordination of health-care services

- behavior
disorders
- working with individuals with disabilities
to provide education strategies and social
support systems.

The college’s eight units provide service to more than
287,000 people annually. Faculty, staff and students help
teachers,
students and administrators at public and private schools;
and
rehabilitation and social welfare agencies that serve families
and
individuals. Some of the college’s newest outreach
efforts help
those coping with addictive behaviors including gambling.

Among the highlights:
- Saluki Kids Academy provides campus-based and
off-campus academic support to at-risk children.
- In
partnership with the city of Cairo, Ill., the Cairo School
District, and the regional office of education, the college
was a founding partner in the creation of the Cairo Community
Education Center.
- The Rehabilitation Institute offers
nationally recognized service programs while developing
practitioners, supervisors, scientists and educators
in rehabilitation organizations.
- Southern Region Early
Childhood Program in the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction provides quality pre-school programs across
Southern Illinois.
- SIUC is one of 17 universities and
colleges participating in a consortium offering classes
at the University Center of Lake County, Ill. SIUC offers
area residents the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s
degree in elementary education.
The College of Education and Human Resources features
several research and development centers, including:
- Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders conducts research
and provides support to children and families affected
by autism.
- Center for Workforce Development works
with the public and private sectors to research and expand
employment opportunities.
- Safety Center conducts
research on driver safety and safety education and provides
motorcycle rider training for the southernmost 56 counties
in Illinois.
- Center for Rural Schools and Communities
researches models
of best practices in teaching and learning.
- Through
the centers and other programs across the college,
$14 million in external funding is generated annually.
Project
12 Ways conducts research on abuse and neglect and provides
support and educational outreach to families.
The
School of Social Work is implementing a program to
provide thorough screening and assessment by a clinical
professional of all children entering Illinois Department
of
Children and Family Services custody.
Southern
at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment,
the blueprint for the long-range growth of SIUC, specifies
foundations on which the college continues to build.
In all human service and education careers, it is essential
for
graduates to be knowledgeable and skilled in their cognitive
area
of expertise, to be understanding and sensitive to the needs
of the
diverse populations they serve, and to be skilled in the
creative
application of current technologies.
The college prepares ethically responsible leaders who are
critically
reflective about their profession and who recognize they
must
continue to learn and refine their knowledge, values, skills
throughout
their professional lives. The college’s commitments
to excellence in
academics and serving others are reflected in various ways:
- Twelve nationally accredited academic and professional
programs
across the college. The teacher education program has
been accredited
for the past 50 years by the National Council for the
Accreditation of
Teacher Education.
- The Teaching Fellows Program
was named a Distinguished Program
in Teacher Education in 2005 by the Association of Teacher
Educators.
- Off-Campus Degree Program in Workforce
Education and Development
enrolls 1,000 students each semester coast to coast,
primarily at
military bases across the country.
