Our Commitment

SIUC’s College of Business and Administration aspires to rank among the top 50 business colleges in the nation.

Our faculty members skillfully guide students through the complexities and intricacies of accounting, finance, management and marketing using state-of-the-art technologies as an integral factor in the educational mission.

Nationally recognized for its success, the college offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees — one of only three public institutions in the state to do so.

Through its fully accredited programs (by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), students prepare for challenging and highly responsible careers in firms and organizations in such fields as business, industry, government and education.

Through a strong grounding in basic skills and by providing the framework for acquiring special skills and performing technical tasks, our graduates are ready to compete in the global marketplace.

The college’s commitment to diversity is reflected through our Office of Minority Affairs. The strength of our relationships with the business community is reflected by the nine boards, comprised of more than 100 business professionals, that advise the dean, department chairs, directors, faculty or minority coordinator. They offer input in such areas as strategic planning, curriculum issues, placement and development.

Burnell D. Kraft Trading Classroom

Burnell D. Kraft knows what it takes to succeed in the world of commodities and stock trading. He spent his entire career in the field, retiring as senior vice president for Archer Daniels Midland, a major international food processor and exporter.

Kraft, a 1956 alumnus, secured funding for the creation of the Burnell D. Kraft Trading Classroom.

The activity of the financial and commodities markets comes directly into the classroom via state-of-the-art computer and trading technologies, including a stock ticker.

Students can now compete with the best on Wall Street, and faculty can stretch students’ understanding of book knowledge in this sophisticated, hands-on learning environment.

The Pontikes Center

Today, effective management of information is critical to the success of any organization.

We live in an age of global networks, online databases, real time information, desktop supercomputers, expert systems, neural networks and knowledge workers.

The Pontikes Center is dedicated to the advancement of practical and theoretical knowledge and learning in management information systems. The Center was established in 1989 with a $1 million endowment from the late Kenneth N. Pontikes.

The Saluki Student Investment Fund

For the group of students who make up the Saluki Student Investment Fund, the quality education and training they receive in their coursework is enhanced through the hands-on, real world experience of managing two stock portfolios.

Up to 12 students each fall sign on for a one-year term as fund managers. Working with a faculty adviser, the group chooses investments after studying various sectors of the economy, such as technology, energy or health care.

One portfolio is funded by donations to the college. Proceeds from investments are available to the fund for future related activities. The second consists of a portion of the SIU Foundation endowment. As money managers, the group earns a fee for managing the portfolio. The principle, including the earnings, remains with the foundation.
