School of Allied Health

Students in the School of Allied Health can choose from a wide variety of programs. Each offers related internship opportunities in clinics, funeral homes, hospitals, nursing homes and public health departments.

Bachelor degree programs include

  • Dental Hygiene
  • Health Care Management
  • Mortuary Science and Funeral Services
  • Physician Assistant
  • Radiologic Sciences

A two-year associate applied science degree program in Physical Therapist Assistant also is offered.

School of Architecture

School of Architecture graduates are much sought-after; the job placement rate exceeds 95 percent. The school also has a national reputation for its summer architecture camps which attract students from fourth grade through high school.

Bachelor degree programs include:

  • Architectural Studies
  • Interior Design
  • Fashion Design and Merchandising

The Interior Design program offers a four-year curriculum and is one of two public baccalaureate programs in Illinois that is accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research.

The combined fashion design and fashion merchandising program is unique among public universities in Illinois.

School of Information Systems & Applied Technologies

The School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies provides quality academic programs in highly technical areas, equipping students with lifelong learning skills that allow them to adapt throughout their professional careers.

Four-year bachelor’s degree programs include

  • Information Systems Technologies
    • This program prepares students for careers in systems design, network administration and application development.
  • Electronic Systems Technologies
    • The program builds upon a solid foundation of fundamental electronic theory with a variety of technical courses.
    • This allows students to tailor their education for specific sectors of the industry such as biomedical equipment technology, telecommunications and networking, and industrial electronics technology.
  • Advanced Technical Studies
    • This program provides a unique bachelor of science opportunity for virtually any two-year technical degree graduate.
  • Fire Science Management
    • Fire Science Management is available only at off-campus locations.

School of Transportation

The School of Transportation features three nationally renowned degree programs:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Aviation Technologies
  • Aviation Management and Aviation Flight

Automotive Technologies has a long tradition of excellent placement of its graduates, with most bachelor’s degree candidates receiving two to three job offers before they graduate.

SIUC offers the only aviation degree programs at a public university in Illinois. The aviation programs are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Proposed Transportation Education Center

Planning is well under way for the proposed $39 million Transportation Education Center at the Southern Illinois Airport between Carbondale and Murphysboro. The state-of-the-art 260,000-square-foot center will consolidate automotive and aviation programs at one site.

College of Applied Sciences & Arts

The college’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service contributes to its outstanding reputation and the market demand for its graduates. The college has one of the largest enrollments – nearly 3,000 – of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s colleges.

The college, which has focused on preparing students for challenging professional careers since its founding in 1951, is comprised of four schools:

  • Information Systems and Applied Technologies
  • Transportation
  • Allied Health
  • Architecture

CASA grants bachelor of science degrees in 15 programs and associate in applied science degrees in two programs. A master of public administration degree with a concentration in aviation administration is offered in partnership with SIUC’s College of Liberal Arts.

Southern@150

Southern at 150Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the long-range growth of SIUC specifies aspirations on which our college continues to build. These include:

  • Service
    • The School of Allied Health operates the SIUC Community Dental Center, which provides free treatment for low-income Southern Illinois children and adults.
    • The Aviation Management and Aviation Flight programs are helping improve safety at the nation’s nearly 5,000 non-commercial airports.
  • Excellence in Undergraduate Academics
    • Four times in the last six years, all of the physician assistant program graduates passed the national certification exam on their first attempt. The 100 percent first attempt pass rate far exceeds the national rate of 93 percent.
    • The tradition-rich Flying Salukis have participated in national competition for 36 consecutive years and have won seven national championships.
  • Excellence in Research
    • Faculty have received extensive grant funding for projects focusing on such diverse issues as smoking cessation and adaptive computer technology and accessible Web site design.
