Located in the Midwest’s agricultural heart and situated
near one million acres of national forest, the College of
Agricultural Sciences emphasizes the development of food,
agriculture and natural resources.
Our
2,000 acre, on-campus farm allows us to offer the best
in traditional agricultural education, while our dynamic
young
faculty expand our academic and research focus into such
fields as
- nutrition & health
- the production of specialty crops (including
grapes and wine)
|
- tourism
- the protection and enhancement of the environment
|
Strong ties with the state’s high
school vocational agriculture
programs, community colleges and the Future
Farmers of America network bring us undergraduate
students from all over
the state.
| Our departments... |
- agribusiness economics
- animal science, food & nutrition
|
- forestry
- plant, soil & agricultural systems
|
| ...offer both undergraduate and graduate
students a range of specializations within
their chosen majors. |
We
are proud of our more than 10,000 alumni who serve in
leadership positions throughout the nation. We also maintain
close contact with agribusiness and commodity groups, turfgrass
producers, hotel and restaurant owners and operators,
foresters and environmental agency heads — all of those
who can use the trained graduates we provide and the new
knowledge we uncover.
Our science-based undergraduate & graduate
degree programs focus on |
- agricultural sciences
- public policy and economic development
- recreation
|
- production technology
- education and information
- food and fiber utilization
|
- business and management
- environmental quality and enhancement
|
Faculty researchers teach our classes
and conduct hands-on laboratories, integrating theory and
practice with a problem-solving approach.

Our
particular strengths include:
- A dietetics degree approved by the American
Dietetics Association.
- An accredited hospitality and
tourism major.
- Pre-veterinary medicine with hands-on
experience
at our beef cattle, swine, horse and dairy cattle centers.
- The state’s only four-year equine science major.
- An accredited forestry degree program with ready
access to nearby state and national forests.
- Turfgrass
and landscape majors.
- Agricultural systems degree
recognized by the
American Association of Agriculture Engineers with
agriculture education, production and technology
specialty majors.
An ever-growing world population and the problems
it creates for infrastructure, policy, and trade place great
pressure on our environment to provide food, fiber, energy
and land resources for farming, industry, living and recreation.
Our college pursues knowledge that not only meets
the urgent needs of today but also safeguards
resources for those who
will inherit the earth from us.
Our scientists focus on problem-solving
research — from
safe, low-impact pesticides to means for enhancing plant
resistance naturally, from improved animal
diets to renewable
fiber production, from ensuring a safe
food supply to
agricultural policy and rural economic
development. But
while scientific knowledge may be worthwhile by itself, it must
be shared to be most useful.
We excel at delivering
answers to those who most need them — whether they
are
farmers, agricultural professionals, peers or members of
the
general public — through field days, forums, workshops,
training sessions and the popular and scientific press.
We
are committed to working diligently to improve the
quality of life for all citizens and to protect our environment
for present and future generations.
Our college is home to
some of the nation’s most productive
scientists. Ongoing research addresses a broad range of subjects
including:
- health, diet, and obesity
- outdoor recreation research management
- food safety and security
|
- animal nutrition and reproduction
- alternative fuels
- environmental policy
- forest resource management
|
- crop production
- agricultural economics
- rural economic development
|
| Many of these activities make use of the college’s
farm complex that incorporates |
- production and research centers for
beef, dairy, swine, and horses
- two agronomy centers
- a horticulture center
|
- orchards
- vineyards
- a tree improvement center
- two research greenhouse centers
|

We also house the Center
for Excellence in Soybean Research, Teaching, and Outreach. This
unique, multidisciplinary center aims
to enhance soybean production and use. Drawing upon more
than 40 faculty and staff from several colleges and schools
within
the University, it focuses on such areas as human and animal
nutrition;
soybean production and protection; soybean improvement
through breeding, biotechnology and genomics; and environmental
sustainability. Technology transfer plays a key role in the
center,
which enhances grower, supplier and consumer knowledge.
