History of the Club

The SIU Amateur Radio Club is one of the oldest student organizations on the Carbondale campus.  It was founded in 1935 and was affiliated with the Synton National Radio Fraternity for many years.  In the early years the club operated a station in Parkinson Laboratory. Later stations were located in Pulliam Hall, the Communications Building and The Engineering and Technology complex.  Today the club shack is on the ground floor of the D wing of Engineering.

The Callsign

The club callsign, W9UIH was originally issued to the SIUC chapter of the Synton fraternity when the club was organized in the 1930s.  The club operated with the callsign WA9FGX for a period in the late 1970s-early 1980s.  Station Trustee and advisor  Mike Hoshiko, W9CJW  worked to recover the original callsign in the 1980s.  Today, the club retains its historic call thanks to Mike’s efforts.
