School of Music Staff Collaborative Pianist Policy
SIUC Staff Collaborative Pianist Duties
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music provides a Staff Collaborative Pianist for all degree recitals performed in fulfillment of requirements for the B.A., B.M.E., B.M., M.M. or M.M.E. degrees. Depending on availability, the Staff Collaborative Pianist may also assist students taking Upper Divisional juries, and/or accompany students participating in the annual SIUC Concerto Competition.
Staff Collaborative Pianist Assignment Priorities
The primary responsibility of the Staff Collaborative Pianist is to collaborate with graduate, senior, and junior music majors in the preparation and performance of degree recitals. Specific time allowances for rehearsals and lessons for priority assignments are outlined in the Staff Collaborative Pianist Policy. Collaborative assignments are prioritized in the following order:
1) MM degree recitals
2) Senior degree recitals
3) Junior degree recitals
4) Upper divisional juries
5) SIUC faculty recitals
6) SIUC Annual Concerto Competition
Alternate Staff Collaborative Pianist Assignments
These assignments may replace, but not be added to, preexisting assignments/duties, and will be subject to the Staff Collaborative Pianist’s workload availability:

2) Choral accompaniment
3) Guest artist master classes
4) SIUC faculty master classes
5) Musical theater accompaniment
Optional Accompanying Performances
The Staff Collaborative Pianist may choose to take on other assignments in addition to the workload priorities listed above. Any assignments which are not part of the Staff Collaborative Pianist’s official workload must be compensated at an agreed upon hourly rate. These include (but are not limited to) the following:
Audition recordings
Off-campus auditions, competitions, or other performances
Instrumental and voice juries [non-upper divisional]
Non-degree recitals
Community recitals
Musical theater auditions

Klassics for Kids
SIUC fundraisers (on or off-campus)
Time Allowances for Staff Collaborative Pianist Priority Assignments
Students assigned to the Staff Collaborative Pianist will be granted a specific number of accompanying hours per semester according to the prioritized list below. All lessons, rehearsals, studio classes, performance classes, dress rehearsals and the recital itself are counted toward these hourly maximums. If the student requests additional time, the Staff Collaborative Pianist is at liberty to decline or to charge the student for the extra time at an agreed-upon rate.
Full Degree Recitals
All students performing a full degree recital will be entitled to up to 18 hours total collaborative assistance at lessons and rehearsals (usually divided as 45 minutes of rehearsal per week plus 45 minutes at the student’s lesson).
Partial Degree Recitals
All students performing a partial degree recital will be entitled to up to 8 hours total collaborative assistance at lessons and rehearsals (usually divided as 30 minutes of rehearsal per week plus 30 minutes at the student’s lesson).
Voice Students, Upper Divisional Juries
Voice students taking Upper Divisionals are entitled to up to 15 hours total collaborative assistance at lessons and rehearsals (usually divided as 30 minutes of rehearsal per week plus 30 minutes at the student’s lesson).
Instrumental Upper Divisional Juries or SIUC Concerto Competition
Instrumental students taking Upper Divisionals and/or participating in the SIUC Concerto Competition will be entitled to up to 6 total hours collaborative assistance (usually divided as 30 minutes of rehearsal per week plus 30 minutes at the student’s lesson).
Requesting the Staff Collaborative Pianist for Lessons and Performances
By the end of the third week of each semester, applied studio instructors must submit a copy of the music score with the SIUC Accompanying Request Form outlining their specific needs. Collaborative requests will be evaluated and prioritized by the Staff Collaborative Pianist. After all requests for degree recitals have been fulfilled, other requests will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Any problems which may arise will be addressed in consultation with the piano faculty and overseen by the Director of the School of Music. All requests for the Staff Collaborative Pianist must be submitted with the scores; requests without scores or without the completed form will not be considered.
Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to make effective use of the Staff Collaborative Pianist’s time by coming promptly and prepared to all scheduled rehearsals and lessons. Students may schedule rehearsals with the Staff Collaborative Pianist once their repertoire is adequately prepared, demonstrating proficiency in accurate notes and rhythms, and the ability to play/sing most of the piece continuously from beginning to end.
Students who miss previously scheduled rehearsals or lessons with the Staff Collaborative Pianist will forfeit that time. In some cases, the Staff Collaborative Pianist may arrange to attend make-up lessons and rehearsals if adequate advance notice has been given; however, this is not guaranteed. Extra rehearsals may be arranged, subject to pianist's availability, at an additional fee.
