Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to be a music major to join the Marching Salukis?
A: Nope. Any and all majors are welcome to join the Marching Salukis! In fact, the majority of the band is non-music majors!

Q: It is difficult to join the Marching Salukis?
A: Not at all. There is no audition to march in the wind sections. So come along and bring a friend! However, there are auditions for spots on the Saluki Drumline and Saluki Silks. The University Bands program recognizes that not all students have the same background in marching ensembles, so auditions are held during Band Camp week, one week before the start of Fall semester classes. During Band Camp, students will be taught basic drill and music, first with only the new member class, then with the returning students.

Q: Aren’t only brass and percussion allowed?
A: No. The Marching Salukis accepts woodwinds along with brass and percussion. Instruments in the Marching Salukis include: Piccolo; Clarinet; Alto, Tenor, and Baritone Saxophones; Trumpet; Mellophone; Trombone; Bass Trombone; Baritone; Sousaphone; Percussion; and Color Guard.

Q: Sounds great! How do I join?
A: Contact your advisor and tell them you wish to enroll in MUS 011, Section 001 for one credit hour. You will be sent information regarding band camp during the summer. Meeting times are a music rehearsal every Monday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. in Altgeld Hall Room 112. Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals are on our practice field, Lot 56, from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. Friday field rehearsals are from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. There are dress rehearsals on the Saturday mornings of home football games.
