FINANCIAL AID FOR
UNDERGRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
AT SIUC
2006-2007


NOTICE: This is a GUIDE only. It is subject to change.

Introduction

Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers several financial aid programs, which are open only to non-immigrant student visa holders through the office of International Programs and Services. Students classified by the Immigration and Naturalization Service as Permanent Residents or Refugees should consult the Financial Aid Office for information on financial aid programs available to them.

I. Tuition Scholarships

A. New Student Honors (Fall or Spring semester only)
Awardees are selected on the basis of their academic achievements either in secondary school or at a previously attended college or university, and unconditional admission to SIUC. Undergraduate awards cover part of the tuition (not fees) for one or more semesters.

Eligibility Requirements

-You must NOT have been an SIUC student directly prior to the semester for which you request the scholarship, however, you must be a currently admitted student to be eligible. (If you have attended SIUC, then transferred to another institution for at least one semester, you may apply for this scholarship during your first semester back at SIUC.)

-Undergraduate applicants must possess a minimum of 3.25 GPA as determined by an evaluation by SIUC evaluation specialist of documents submitted as required with your application.

-Undergraduate applicants must be unconditionally admitted to an undergraduate academic program of study. English as a second language students are not eligible for this award.

-Students receiving awards must carry a full time course load during the term(s) covered by the award.

-This is a very competitive process, and not every applicant who meets minimum requirements will be awarded a scholarship.

-Contingent upon available resources, a student who receives this award and maintains at least a 3.25 GPA may continue to apply for additional awards in subsequent semesters.
Application Dates

Application Dates

--Applicants who have a complete university application on file by February for the following Fall will be considered for the scholarship. Applicants who complete their application for Fall semester later than February may be considered for Fall. Applicants who have a complete university application on file by July for the following spring semester will be considered for the scholarship.Applicants who complete their spring application later than July may be considered.

--Awards will be determined in the spring for the following Fall semester, and in the fall for the following Spring semester. Determination of awards will be based upon evaluation of university application and related required documents.


B. New Student Legacy (Fall or Spring semester only)

Awardees are selected on the basis of their confirmed relationship with a previous graduate of an SIUC academic program; their own academic achievements either in secondary school or at a previously attended college or university; and unconditional admission to SIUC. Undergraduate awards cover part of the tuition (not fees) for one or more semesters.

Eligibility Requirements

-You must be the child, grandchild, sibling, or spouse of a person who has already earned a degree from SIUC. You must document both your relationship to that person, AND that person’s degree.

-You must NOT have been an SIUC student directly prior to the semester for which you request the scholarship, however, you must be a currently admitted student to be eligible. (If you have attended SIUC, then transferred to another institution for at least one semester, you may apply for this scholarship during your first semester back at SIUC.)

-Undergraduate applicants must be unconditionally admitted to an undergraduate academic program of study. English as a second language students are not eligible for this award.

-Students receiving awards must carry a full time course load during the term(s) covered by the award.

C. Continuting Students Academic Achievement Tuition Assistance

Awardees are selected on the basis of their academic achievements, involvement in SIUC activities or services, and financial need. Undergraduate awards cover part of the tuition (not fees) for one or more semesters.


Eligibility Requirements

-You must have completed one year of academic (beyond English as a Second Language) study at SIUC prior to the semester for which you request the scholarship.

-Undergraduate applicants must possess a minimum of 3.5 GPA.

-Students receiving awards must carry a full time course load during the term(s) covered by the award.

-This is a very competitive process, and not every applicant who meets minimum requirements will be awarded a scholarship.

Application Dates

-Applications for the undergraduate awards will be available from International Students & Scholars each Spring semester. Students must apply for the tuition scholarship for the upcoming Summer, Fall and Spring semesters. Notice of application dates are published in the International Dateline and in the Daily Egyptian.

II. Short-Term Emergency Loans

Short-Term Emergency Loans are available through ISS in cooperation with the Office of Student Work and Financial Assistance. These loans must be repaid in approximately 60 days, and applicants must have a confirmed source of funds from which the loan can be repaid (e.g. assistantship, scholarship, student job, check deposited with Bursar). Loans are normally for $100-$200, but may be approved for up to $350 if funds for repayment are specifically documented. Due to limited funds, short-term loans may not always be available. Consult with ISS for more information.

III. Student-to-Student Grants

STS Grants are awarded each semester to undergraduate international students on the basis of academic achievement. Awards range from $100 to $300 for one semester. The grant is funded by the STS fee, which is charged to undergraduate students.

Eligibility Requirements

-You must have completed at least one semester at SIUC.

-You must be an undergraduate full-time student.

-Your GPA must be at least 2.0.

-You must have paid the STS fee for the semester in which you apply.
Application Dates

-Applications available in the third week of each semester (second week in Summer). Exact dates will be announced in the International Dateline and/or in the Daily Egyptian.

IV. Other Scholarship Financial Aid

In addition to the scholarships available ONLY to international students, there are several collegiate or departmental scholarships for which any SIUC student may be qualified. Please visit the SIUC Financial Aid web page.


V. Student Work Referrals

International students on an F-1 visa are eligible to hold only on-campus, “non-federal work study” (Non-FWS) student jobs, which pay the SIUC minimum wage (currently $6.50 per hour), or assistantships. Work Referral forms are obtained from ISS. (International students are prohibited by the Immigration & Naturalization Service from working off-campus without special permission.) Eligibility Requirements
International students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours during the regular academic year, and 6 credit hours during the summer term to be eligible for on-campus student employment during those terms.


Restrictions
-International students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session. During breaks they may work full time (37.5 hours per week) if work is available.


Application Procedure
The procedure for securing on campus employment or assistantship is as follows:


1. Find a potential job opportunity on campus through the Financial Aid Office. (Either non-federal student work or an undergraduate assistantship. See the Financial Aid Office web page for jobs that are currently listed.)

2. Apply for the job or assistantship

3. Receive an offer of employment or assistantship from the on-campus office or unit

4. Obtain a work referral from the office of International Students and Scholars

5. Visit the university Tax Compliance Office to complete essential tax documents required for employment

6. Receive your first paycheck, being sure to keep an official record of it, such as your paycheck stub, or record of direct deposit

7. Take your record of payment to the local Social Security Office to apply for a Social Security Number

8. Once you have received your Social Security Number, you must, once again, visit the university Tax Compliance Office to update your essential tax documents.
