  • maintain enrollment in 12 hours a semester
  • meet the specific requirements of the department

Irrigation System Management Specialist

Develop management techniques and procedures for a center pivot irrigation site that features automated remote monitoring of a center pivot irrigation system using a global positions system (GPS) receiver and cell phone transmitter to transmit data to a web server. The student will: 1) specify, install, and test integrated global positioning system (GPS) receiver and cell phone transmitter for remote monitoring of center pivot location to reduce labor costs; 2) input and analyze fertility and yield data into geographical information system (GIS) 2) use GIS data to make management recommendations for irrigated land 4) prepare and print maps for demonstration of capabilities to other students and 5) document management procedures
Undergraduate student in Agriculture Systems or related major with advanced Microsoft Windows experience. Must be self-motivated. Preferred candidates have junior or senior standing, control programming experience and/or practical computer hardware/electronics coursework or experience. Sensor and Control System Specialist

Select and implement sensor and control systems for data collection and agricultural procession projects. The student in this position will receive advanced training and mentoring to provide vital participation in projects by implementing electronic controls and sensor systems. The student will 1) analyze sensor and control needs for specific projects 2) design sensor and control circuits using AutoCAD, Visio, LabVIEW and other software 3) implement and test sensor and control circuits 4) document sensor and control systems

Measurement Scale Database Assistant

The student will be assigned the following major tasks during the nine month appointment 1) prepare measurement scale data so it is in a format amenable for electronic distribution, most likely to be online but possibly including a CD 2) test the online version of the database and log problems that must be resolved 3) continually collect source materials (journal articles) that are used by the professor in reviewing published measurement scales 4) add scales from 2006+ to the consumer portion of the database, and 5) begin preparing a new subsection of the database (organizational measures)
The student should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, be a marketing major with a good working knowledge of the methodology of marketing research This knowledge would typically come from taking MKTG 390 (Marketing Research). However, the requisite level of insight and experience might also come from a combination of other courses and/or work experience. The student should be able to understand and follow lots of intricate instructions, devise creative solutions to problems, and have a comprehensive understanding of marketing constructs and processes. Set hours are not necessary; there is great flexibility with where and when work is done

Foster research and the development of research skills, and to promote student-faculty collaboration by creating an opportunity for a student to participate in a faculty member's research project. The duties/responsibilities of this position include the following: 1) assist in transcribing interviews and song lyrics for recordings 2) indexing audio and video recordings of musical performances 3) gathering references and biographical/musical data on artists, tracking down sources, and compiling a bibliography 4) inputting and organizing data on the computer Possibly, also assisting in preparing for interviews and in transferring transcriptions of musical examples to a music software program

Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy Assistant

The undergraduate assistant will have the opportunity to work in a structural biology laboratory using techniques learned from molecular biology, biochemistry, protein chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry. The undergraduate assistant will be responsible for the expression and purification of the amino terminal RNA Recognition Motif domain (N-RRM) of cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein (CPEB), which is involved in translation regulation. The N-RRM domain will be further characterized by biochemical techniques including liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy will be used to determine the three dimensional structure of the N-RRM domain. The undergraduate assistant will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data, describing the results to the laboratory group, contributing to a peer reviewed research paper and presenting the results at a national conference.
The undergraduate assistant must be a major in Chemistry or other Life Science. Completion of undergraduate courses in General and Organic Chemistry is required. Additional coursework in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Quantitative Analysis, and Physical Chemistry is highly recommended.

Protein Structure Characterization

The undergraduate student will have the opportunity to work on the isolation and purification of novel protein domains involved in protein-protein interactions in the cell-cell junctions. The student will utilize molecular biological, biochemical, biophysical and bioanalytical to characterize the structure and function of these proteins. The student will learn PCR and cloning techniques, protein expression, protein isolation, protein purification and characterization using column chromatographic methods and gel electrophoretic methods. Purified proteins will be used for structural studies by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The student will learn how to analyze NMR data collected on the 500 MHz NMR spectrometer at SIU and 800 and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers located in regional facilities. The data interpretation will be used for protein structural characterization and determination. It is the goal of the principal investigator to involve the undergraduate student in research that will lead to publications and to provide the student with the opportunity to present his/her research results in regional and national meetings.
The undergraduate assistant must be pursuing a major in Chemistry or a major in Life Sciences. The student should have completed at least CHEM 200, 201, 210, and 211 with preference to students that have completed courses in Quantitative Analysis

Graphics Design Assistant

This position will be an assistant supervisor of the Graphic Design section of Instructional Support Services. Under the direction of the ISS Graphic Designer, the Undergraduate Assistant will assist in determining project feasibility, project design, and workload allocation. The Assistant will have direct client interaction to determine the scope and intent of proposed projects. The Assistant will supervise student workers in the section, providing technical expertise, and project management. The position will also train new student workers, assist and direct them in their work. When the Graphics Design supervisor is not in, this position will be responsible for the workload and the student workers in the graphic design department.
Must be proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Quark and Dreamweaver experience a plus. Must have desktop publishing and print production knowledge and skills, including paste up and layout experience. Requires ability to take a project from start to finish, includes working directly with clients. Requires ability to work independently as well as with a team. Must have ability to create web pages and be able to learn new software quickly as needed.
