What
is incubation?
According to the National Business Incubation Association
website business incubation is a dynamic process of business
enterprise development. An incubator is a business that is
set up to help foster business enterprise development. They
help young firms get started and help them survive at times
when they are most vulnerable.
The primary goal of a business incubator is to produce successful
graduates. They offer shared services, access to equipment,
flexible leases, and expandable space. Many incubators are
located near other services that are valuable to an incubating
business. For example, the SIUC Business Incubation Program
has the Office of Economic and Regional Development, the Small
Business Development Center, SouthernTECH, and the Illinois
Manufacturing Extension Center housed in the Dunn-Richmond
Economic Development Center.
