Description: After some introductory discussion of what political economy is, the class will be an in-depth investigation of what was the political economy of developing hierarchical societies in general and Mississippian social formations in particular. For an outline of the range of topics, see my Mississippian Political Economy (Plenum 1997).

Prerequisites: None, but the ability to read and critically assess archaeological reports will be crucial.

Requirements: Readings, class assignments, and research paper.

Text: None, but extensive readings will be assigned. There will be heavy use of my Mississippian Political Economy (Plenum 1997)
